My World Unconnected

I think this post might best categorized as ironic.

For the better part of my career, I have sold wireless service. More recently my most lucrative sales have been smart phones because of the incentives on the $30/month data plans. As an avid user of a Blackberry I have been a big advocate for checking email on the go.

But, I have reached a cross roads. I think that I’ve become too connected.

Email isn’t necessarily an immediate means of communication. It can be, but if you need an immediate response a phone call or a text message (for some) is probably better. Email is really meant for more detailed or thought out communication. My current job responsibilities do not require immediate response to emails and there are very few of my personal emails that can’t wait for a response. So, I’ve decided it’s time to cut off my data plan. In some way, I feel like I may be betraying my Blackberry or my industry. But I’ll get over it.

It’s not like I’m giving up on the Internet. I’m way too addicted for that. I’m just cutting back. I still have my laptop with high speed WiFi access at home and a computer at work.

So, what are the positives? Well…

  • I’ll be a better driver… no more email while I’m driving.
  • I’ll pay more attention to my wife when we’re out
  • I’ll be surprised by my email inbox when I get home
  • The buttons on my phone will last longer

Wish me luck. I hope the withdrawal pains aren’t too bad. :-)
